I Tried Our 5 Most Popular Deviled Egg Recipes and My Favorite Stole the Show – Latest Food News Update
My dad makes plenty of delicious dishes, but his deviled eggs are one of his best. The combination of perfectly hard-boiled eggs with the most deliciously seasoned yolks ensures that each bite is delectable. I’ve sampled other versions, but they never taste as good as his. That was until about a week ago, when I tested five of Allrecipes’ top-rated deviled egg recipes and found a winner that rivaled my dad’s.

In order to be included in the test, all of the deviled egg recipes had to have at least a 4.3 star rating. Beyond that, there were no other limitations or restrictions. There are a variety of deviled egg recipes on the site, but we chose five contenders, each a little bit unique.
One deviled egg recipe is classically made and seasoned, while another is sweetened with pickle relish. There’s a recipe that calls for bacon and Cheddar cheese, another that gains a little heat from hot sauce, and one that features fresh dill.
In order to get the best results, I prepared all of the recipes using the same type and brand of eggs. I made all of the recipes following the recipe instructions and gave them each a four-hour stint in the refrigerator before sampling. I assembled my testers and had them blindly try each egg. Once they’d sampled all of the eggs, I asked them to rank and choose their favorite.

I’m a big fan of using fresh herbs, and that’s what made this recipe a winner. The optional addition of chopped dill gave the rich filling a pleasantly refreshing finish. Everyone agreed that the flavor was good and they enjoyed the creamy texture. Like other reviewers we noticed the filling was a bit loose, which could easily be modified by reducing the amount of mayonnaise. Another option is to refrigerate and pipe the filling just before serving. Overall, we enjoyed the recipe and agree it’s “classic” and delicious!

If you like a bit of crunch with your deviled eggs, then this is the recipe you should make. The finely chopped celery and onion made for a delightfully crisp bite, which all of my reviewers enjoyed. The flavor overall was delicious and everyone liked the subtle heat before the dash of hot pepper sauce. The only issue we had was the looseness of the filling. Even after refrigerating for four hours, it was soupier than we would’ve liked. If I make these again, I’ll pipe them just before serving.

The addition of sweet pickle relish pushes these deviled eggs into the “less-than-savory” category. Perhaps the addition of horseradish was an attempt to balance that, but overall, my testers enjoyed this recipe the least. While I like horseradish, it didn’t make sense to me here. Next time I’ll skip the horseradish and either decrease the pickle relish or go for dill relish, or I’ll skip the relish and keep the horseradish.

Obviously if you love bacon, then this is a pretty great recipe for deviled eggs. The bacon is the predominant flavor, too, so if you’re after something with more classic flavors, this isn’t it. My testers enjoyed the recipe, but wished for something to balance out the bacon. The Cheddar cheese was barely noticeable, which left us wondering if adding more of it would help. We agreed that the addition of diced chives as a garnish would be delicious, and like some reviewers mentioned, swapping some of the mayonnaise with sour cream.

Up until I had tried this recipe, I wasn’t sure if there’d be a recipe that rivaled my dad’s. After one bite of these, though, I knew I’d found my winner. I was smitten, but it turned out that so were my testers. We all enjoyed the flavor, which was subtle but enough to season the creamy yolk. The added bit of crunch from the onion and celery provided just the right amount of texture to keep things interesting.
Overall, it’s a tasty deviled egg that doesn’t need much else. One thing to mention however is that the recipe calls for 1/2 teaspoon of salt for six eggs, which is on the high side (reviewers confirm this in the comments). I recommend adding salt at the very end, and taste as you go. I only ended up with a 1/4 teaspoon, which seemed just right.
