UTM links that survive Instagram, WhatsApp, and a printed QR

UTM links that survive Instagram, WhatsApp, and a printed QR

A naming rule, a builder workflow, and the mistakes that split your analytics into junk rows.

If three people in a small team tag Instagram three different ways, Analytics becomes a junk drawer. UTM Builder is a checklist, not a toy: one landing URL that already works on mobile, then utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign with names you could explain to a new intern.

Use lowercase and hyphens: instagram, not IG on Monday and Insta on Thursday. Medium is the channel type (social, email, cpc), not the creative colour. Campaign is the offer (ramadan-menu-2026). Optional utm_content is for A/B artwork. Write the rule in a one-page brief and paste every live URL from the builder so nobody “improves” spelling in the ads manager.

Instagram, WhatsApp, and printed QR codes all wrap links. WhatsApp preview can look ugly with long query strings — that is fine; the tap still carries the tags. For print, generate the QR from the full UTM URL, then scan it on a phone that is not on studio Wi-Fi. If the code points at localhost or a login wall, the campaign is already dead.

UTMs do not fix a weak landing page. If the Bio or the offer is thin, tagged traffic still bounces. Build the page, then tag. Never put tokens or passwords in a query string. For a destination you can edit after print, encode a Link-in-Bio URL, not a post that will be archived next week.
