About this tool
Turn < and & into safe HTML text, or turn entities back into characters.
Use encode when you want to show code on a page without the browser running it. The characters &, <, >, quotes, and apostrophes become entities.
Use decode when a feed or export stored the text already escaped and you need the original characters. Decoding does not execute a page.
This is not a formatter and it does not fetch a URL. Pair it with the HTML formatter if you also want indentation.
Quick steps
- Paste the text.
- Encode or decode.
- Copy the result into your editor.
The text stays in this browser tab.
FAQ
Will encode stop a script from running?
It escapes the characters. You still review what you publish.
Does decode run the HTML?
No. The result is text in the box.
