About this tool
Find how long an investment takes to earn back its cost, with and without discounting.
Simple payback = investment ÷ yearly cash inflow. Discounted payback = −ln(1 − I·r/CF) ÷ ln(1 + r) for a constant inflow CF and discount rate r.
Formula: Payback = I / CF
Example: Initial investment = 50,000, Cash inflow per year = 12,000, Discount rate = 8 → Simple payback (years) = 4.17, Discounted payback (years) = 5.27.
Assumes the same inflow every year. Payback ignores what happens after the investment is recovered.
