Redact PDF

Burn black boxes into marked pages so the covered text is not still selectable.

Pages you mark are rebuilt as images and the box is burned in black, so the text under it is not still selectable. Pages without a box stay as they were.

About this tool

Cover regions and burn them into the page so the hidden text is not still selectable.

Draw boxes on a page. Those pages are rebuilt as images with the boxes painted solid black. Pages you do not mark are copied as they were.

A black box drawn by a normal editor can be deleted to reveal the text. This tool avoids that on the pages you mark, because those pages no longer contain the original text layer. It is not a substitute for a certified redaction review.

Quick steps

  1. Open a PDF.
  2. Draw a box around each private area.
  3. Download. Check that the covered text cannot be selected.

Redaction runs in your browser. The original file on your disk is not changed.

FAQ

Why does a marked page become an image?

So the words under the box are not left in the PDF as hidden text. Unmarked pages stay as normal PDF pages.
